Metro Omaha Tobacco Action Coalition (MOTAC) is a nonprofit organization focused on reducing tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure in the Omaha area through education, public policy, and community partnerships. Founded in 1992, MOTAC works throughout Douglas County to address tobacco related issues that impact both public health and housing environments. For landlords and property managers, MOTAC provides support in implementing smoke free housing policies. They offer education, tools, and guidance to help transition rental properties to smoke free environments, which can improve tenant health and overall property performance. Smoke free housing also helps reduce exposure to secondhand smoke, which can move between units through ventilation systems, walls, and shared spaces. MOTAC works directly with property owners to develop and implement smoke free housing policies, including lease language, tenant communication, and rollout strategies. They also assist with enforcement approaches and provide resources that help reduce risks associated with smoking, including property damage, fire hazards, and increased turnover costs. In addition to housing related efforts, MOTAC is involved in broader initiatives such as promoting tobacco free workplaces, supporting tobacco free parks, reducing youth tobacco use, and advocating for policies that limit tobacco exposure across the community. MOTAC collaborates with local organizations, housing providers, and public agencies to create healthier living environments and reduce the long term health and economic impacts associated with tobacco use.
